Round one
Sit in the heat.
Find a spot on the bench, close your eyes and let the warmth do the work. Stay until your shoulders drop and your breath slows down, often around ten minutes. Listen to your body, not the clock.
Nobody is timing you. Nobody is talking shop. That is the point.
Cool down.
Step out into the cool air, or under a cold shower. Let the heat leave you on its own. Breathe in through your nose, slowly. Then breathe out longer than you breathed in.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Rest about as long as you were in the heat. Have some water. Say nothing, or say plenty. Then, when you are ready, go again.
Round two
Water on the stones.
The Finns call the steam that rises löyly. The same word once meant breath, or spirit. Ladle on a little water and the room comes alive.
Find your still.
