One of the two float rooms at Holohan Martial Arts, Dublin 24.
Gravity, off
You can't sink.
You can't roll over.
More than 450 kg of medical grade Epsom salt is dissolved in each tank. You stay buoyant for the whole hour, so it's completely safe to fall asleep.
Sound, off
Ten minutes of music to settle you.
Then it fades out.
And there's nothing to hear but your own breathing.
Ear plugs are waiting in your room.
Light, off
You're in charge of the lid and the light.
Close both, or leave them open on your first float. The tank is 8 ft 6 in long and 5 ft 6 in wide, and the room is yours alone, with its own shower.
Time, off
An hour, with nothing in it.
There's no clock to watch. The water tells you when it's over.
- 0:00Music, to settle in.
- 0:10The music fades.
- 0:10 to 0:55Golden silence, for forty-five minutes.
- 0:55The music fades back in, to ease you out.
- 1:00Shower, dress, and back out into the day.
Nothing.
That's the whole idea.

Everything, back on
Five minutes before the end, the music comes back.
You come out relaxed, refreshed and a little bit slower. Floating can help with stress, sleep, aches and training recovery, and the more often you float, the more you get from it.
I float at least once a week and have made it part of my training and recovery program. You are literally on a high for the rest of the day when you get out.
Your first float.
Our team takes you through everything and answers any questions before you start.

Questions people ask
What should I wear?
Some people wear a swimsuit or shorts, others wear nothing so they aren't distracted by clothing. Lots of people wear a swimsuit the first time. Your float room is private, so it's completely up to you.
What if I'm claustrophobic?
The tank is 8 ft 6 in long and 5 ft 6 in wide, with plenty of room to move. You control the opening of the pod and the light. People who worry about claustrophobia usually leave the lid open on their first float, and find it fine.
Can I fall asleep?
Yes, it's completely safe. The salt solution is so dense that it's very hard to roll over, and you always stay buoyant.
Can I float while pregnant?
From the second trimester it is completely safe to float, and it can relieve a lot of the aches and pains of pregnancy. Floating isn't permitted in the first trimester. If you have any concerns, ask your doctor first.
How clean is the tank?
A filtration system runs after every session, and all the water passes through an ultraviolet sterilisation system. More than 450 kg of medical grade Epsom salt is dissolved in the tank, a concentration so high that no living microorganism can survive in it. A shower before floating is mandatory.
How do I know when it's over?
There are ten minutes of music at the start, then golden silence for forty-five minutes. In the last five minutes the music fades back in to ease you out.

Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. Such a warm, inviting space. The staff were so knowledgeable, thorough and personable. The facilities were so clean and the float itself was indescribable.
If I could use one word it would be bliss. I felt great afterwards, very relaxed and pain free.
